Performance and refinement
Designing a convertible combining these levels of performance and refinement brings its own unique challenges. Fortunately, Bentley has an unequaled history when it comes to convertibles. The design of the Continental GT Speed Convertible conveys a message of dominant performance, with dark-tint touches to the exterior, and a hand-crafted interior which, when the top is down, takes center stage.
With its four-layer fabric hood in place, the Continental GT Speed Convertible has the profile of a high-performance Bentley coup. Yet, once the hood is stowed away, the eye can survey a smooth, uninterrupted sweep of bodywork. In this form the clean, confident proportions of the GT Speed Convertible are even more striking: the seamless Superformed wings and crisply-defined body creases create an impression of tension and muscularity, right back to the redesigned rear lip spoiler.
Bentleys engineering team has ensured that the new Speed Convertible W12 engine and power train is just as fuel-efficient as the Continental GT. The latest engine management system, an 8-speed transmission with variable power-assisted steering, increases economy and further reduces emissions.
Powerful new engine
The W12 engine is mated to a ZF eight-speed transmission: designed to handle the extreme levels of torque generated by the W12, the transmission cuts acceleration times by ensuring that the engine is always at the ideal speed for peak torque delivery. This state-of-the-art transmission also features “Block Shifting” technology, capable of shifting directly from (for example) 8th gear to 4th gear for instantaneous response and acceleration.
By bringing the GT Speed Convertible just 10mm closer to the ground, Bentley’s chassis engineering team laid the foundation for an even sportier driving experience. To do so, they changed the springs, dampers, anti roll bars and suspension bushes. The result is improved body control under hard cornering together with greater agility.
Bentleys engineering team has ensured that the new Speed Convertible W12 engine and power train is just as fuel-efficient as the Continental GT. The latest engine management system, an eight-speed transmission and careful refinement of the turbocharger settings have seen an overall improvement of 12% in fuel economy, with a commensurate increase in tank range compared to the previous generation model.
